Tortilleria Tlaxcali: Authentic Mexican Tacos and Homemade Tortillas in Houston

I came here one Saturday morning just to check out what Mexican breakfast food they had to offer. Long time Houstonians correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this used to be a KFC back in the day. Anyway, I pulled up and the parking lot isn’t much to look at and was packed but I was able to squeeze into the only open spot. I could tell right away that this is a popular neighborhood spot. There was an older gentleman at the door holding it open for people entering. This place was bustin’ at the seams inside from so many people. The ordering area is narrow and there are people standing on either side, some ordering food and others waiting. I didn’t see a seating area. The way it works is you just get in line and then as you move along the line, order what you want and they will serve, package and hand it to you at the end of the line. The line moves fast as most people already knew what they wanted. It was my first time there, so I was taking my time. Don’t be alarmed if people move right past you if you take too long to decide what you want. The servers are quick as well, so they keep it moving. The music is loud and upbeat, so it blends in perfectly with the atmosphere. I ordered a taco of Chicharrones Verdes, a pound of Barbacoa, a half dozen of tamales and some Chicharrones. They also make tortillas in house, so I ordered some as well. The food was delicious! The Chicharrones Verdes were tender and spicy with a savory taste. The barbacoa was tender and juicy and not too greasy. The tamales were good but I prefer them to be a bit more spicy. I probably wouldn’t order them again. I would definitely order the Chicharron taco and Barbacoa again. The Chicharrones were crispy and juicy and tender at the same time. I would come back just for them. Overall, if you’re looking for a fancy dining experience or somewhere to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, this probably isn’t for you. If you are looking for delicious authentic food and quick service, then come here. You will not be disappointed.

Ok guys fair is fair and here we go! What an outstanding family owned restaurant. This place has amazing food and very good customer service. The staff is amazing always smiling and friendly. The food is fresh and very clean preparations. Place opens up at 4:00 am and has a line early. Best time to come is after 9:00 am. I will be coming back here for good authentic food. Highly recommended

And if you get a chance to meet some of the ladies there they're great bunch of ladies good attitude well-mannered have to hand my hands down to them especially belma I've been waiting here for 12 years maybe a little longer and I still have her not one complained of this place everything is great and if you happen to find yourself on this side of town drop in homemade tortillas flour and corn every food is freshly made and more than likely you'll be able to run into me there

Home made corn tortillas. All the food is made fresh daily. You pay by the taco corn or flour. One price. Food is over stuffed two tacos and you’re good to go for the whole day. I’m in love with this place. Best food I’ve ever had.

The Gorditas are huge. You have to try the Chicharron by the register. Everything is good.

Good Mexican food if you're looking for something to you grab-n-go in the early wee hours of the morning. Due to the Mexican culture their service is more like hello how you doing what you need goodbyes come again thank you for your business type of service. Not nothing bad about it but they like to move business in and out when inside ordering to go. I can't say nothing bad about their food although I got a few different varieties of breakfast tacos and even put together a combination of my own. They have fresh in-house made chicharrones and their tortillas or even great. As far as dining and the atmosphere it's okay. The food I can honestly say is far from Tex-Mex it's truly authentic Mexican food. Not sure what their lunch is like but you can get everything during a early morning visit as early as 4:30 am. Throughout my mini visits the food has always been great for me.

They keep this place clean, the ladies are awesome and the food is delicious!! I walked in late after they had almost everything cleaned and put away...I was so hungry...they made me a huge burrito, pork. I also bought a chicharrón, they heated it up for me and put tortillas in the bag. Y'all the tortillas were delicious and the chicharron was perfect!! Please, give these people your business. You won't be sorry if you like Mexican food and good people.

This is my go-to place for authentic Mexican food. No bells and whistles here just good food and hard-working and kind cooks. I usually get a plate with rice and beans with 2 choices of protein. They give you a ton of food, enough to feed me and the hubby for a good deal. 100% recommend.
